STEPHEN FRKETIC is thrilled to join the staff at St. Bartholomew’s! He comes to us from Toronto, Canada, where he had served as the Organist and Choirmaster at Grace Church on-the-Hill since 2013. Stephen completed his Masters degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Toronto, and also holds a Bachelors degree in Organ Performance from Indiana University’s prestigious Jacobs School of Music. He is a native of Jacksonville, Florida.
During his musical tenure in Toronto, Stephen led choir tours to Montréal, Ottawa, and Québec City, as well as a two-week Cathedral residency in 2016 to sing daily services of Evensong at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, and Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. He is a recent Past-President of the Toronto Centre of the Royal Canadian College of Organists, and also served as the Assistant Conductor of Toronto’s Common Thread Community Chorus for three seasons. Before pursuing his graduate studies, Stephen worked as a high school choir director in Houston, Texas, and also as an English Language Instructor in Tokyo.
Stephen is passionate about the power of sacred music to bring people of all ages and backgrounds together and nurtures a strong sense of community in the choirs he works with. He seeks to expose people to a diverse musical repertoire drawn not only from our superb Anglican choral tradition, but also from the great body of spirituals and the music of living composers being written today. He looks forward to introducing the music of his favorite composers to the choir and congregation of St. Bartholomew’s, and can’t wait to meet everyone.
His husband Anson is a research scientist and recently accepted a position at Emory University in the department of human genetics. They look forward to making their home in Atlanta.
