St. Bartholomew’s parishioners (from left) Geoff Oosterhoudt, Marynell Jacob, Jerry Brooks and Wayne Godfrey take their turn staffing the Episcopal booth at the Pride Festival on July Fourth weekend.  A large number of visitors stopped by to watch a video, talk and pick up pamphlets, including one that lists 23 parishes in the diocese identifying themselves as welcoming to gay men and lesbians.

This year’s Atlanta Gay Pride Festival was held over the July Fourth weekend at Boisfeuillet Jones Civic Center.  And once again it will be our chance to join together – straight and gay, young, old, partnered, single – and help proclaim “The Episcopal Church Welcomes You.”

For us, the weekend will begin Thursday night, July 3, with Atlanta Integrity’s 20th annual Gay Pride Eucharist.  Bishop Keith Whitmore will be celebrant and Jan Nunley of the Episcopal News Service will preach. Mark your calendar and plan to be there:  7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 3, at All Saints Church.  It’s a great way to start Pride weekend.

On Friday the Fourth and through the weekend, we’ll be staffing our “The Episcopal Church Welcomes You” booth at the Pride Festival in the Civic Center.

The parade will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 6. (Yes, you’ll have time to go to church and march in the parade!)  The route will be the reverse of previous years, starting at Tenth Street and heading south down Peachtree Street to Ralph McGill Boulevard.  As usual, there’ll be a hospitality table in front of St. Luke’s Church, where volunteers will be greeting the thousands of parade participants who pass by.

The weekend will be a great opportunity for evangelism, and we encourage your participation – staffing the booth or hospitality table, carrying a banner in the parade – at whatever level you feel comfortable.  Look for more information soon in the parish hall.
