14 Take Vows in New Society for Episcopal Women

Fourteen women recited vows as members of the new Society of St. Anna the Prophet (SSAP) in a ceremony February 2 at St. Bartholomew's. Bishop J. Neil Alexander presided and preached about the importance of companionship in Christian service.

Founded two years ago by the Rev. Nancy Baxter, the SSAP is a community of women aged 50 and older who are living the Christian life within vows of simplicity, creativity and balance. The members are laywomen, priests and deacons. They are single, married, partnered, widowed or divorced. As a dispersed society, members have their own places of residence. The society focuses on service to children and the elderly.

Nancy was quoted in a recent edition of Connecting, the diocesan weekly Email newsletter, as saying, "Inspired by the example of Anna's witness, we seek to promote the godly aging of our members and to provide a prophetic witness to the gifts and graces of old age."
