KIDS 4 PEACE

In less than a month, a group of 12 kids from Jerusalem and their advisors will make the long journey from home to Georgia to spend two weeks of camp with Kids4Peace 2008.  Four of them - Maayan, Liam, Yaniv, and Asaf are Jewish kids.  Four are Orthodox Christian - Lamar, Annie, Pery, and Munir.  And four of them are Muslim - Farah, Hadeel, Saleh, and Ibrahim.  They are "peace pals" with 12 kids in the 6th and 7th grades from various Episcopal churches here in the Diocese of Atlanta - three of who are members of St. Bartholomew's - Whitner, Jenshe, and Riley.  Also actively involved with this years camp from St. Bart's are Mary Catherine, John, Sharon, and Susan.  The Rev. Josh Thomas will also be involved, returning as a pastoral counselor for these two weeks, and to facilitate dialogue among the faiths.  We have been meeting together, with staff, kids, parents and guests to prepare ourselves to be knowledgeable about our very special friends and the lives they live.  It is a chance to open ourselves up to give tangible meaning to our baptismal covenant:  "to strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being." (BCP 305)

You are invited to be a witness to this amazing work.  On Tuesday, July 8, at 7:00 p.m. at Camp Mikell and again on Sunday July 13 immediately following the morning service at St. Anne's, the kids will present "Abraham's Tent" - a program/skit they will have worked on together to help each other understand the faiths represented among them.  In an entertaining display of common misunderstandings, the kids will reveal to each other and for those present the basics of their beliefs, the respect they have for each other, and their hope for peace among the nations.  All are welcome.

This joint project of the dioceses of Jerusalem and Atlanta links 12 children from Israel and Palestine with 12 from several of our parishes.
