Music

 Brad Hughley, Organist/Choirmaster

St. Bartholomew’s has a comprehensive music program, and offers challenges to members of all levels of experience. The choir season aligns with the academic calendar year, taking a hiatus in the summer months. While the department is on break, a summer choir is open to any member of the parish who wants to join.

The music department currently supports over 70 members, distributed among 3 adult choirs, two children’s choirs, and a handbell choir. Two of the adult choirs and one of the children’s choirs provide the music for the 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning liturgy on a rotating basis. The Schola, a select group of ten singers, meets on even-numbered Sundays to sing the office of Compline.

In addition to liturgy, the music department sponsors many concerts throughout the year as an outreach ministry to the community. Many of these concerts are free, and a few ask for donations to support the musicians. St. Bartholomew’s also welcomes New Trinity Baroque for a third season in residence at St. Bartholomew’s – their high quality performances attract growing audiences each year.

Whether you are thinking of joining, new, or already in one of the choirs, I invite you to explore the website for more information on the music program.

May God prosper our handiwork.

Compline - The Office of Compline, sung by the Schola, is offered at 8:00 p.m. the second & fourth Sunday of the month, September - May. Known as the "bedtime" service, Compline is the simplest of the monastic offices. At St. Bartholomew's a Schola of unaccompanied voices sings the entire service in a candlelit church with incense. The service has become a vital part of this worshiping community since 1986, and offers a meditative and peaceful way to begin the work week. All are welcome.

Compline 2nd & 4th Sundays

September 9 marks the return of the Schola singing the office of Compline, at 8:00 p.m.

This brief service is a soothing way to end the day and prepare for the week ahead, and has been a tradition at St. Bartholomew's for over 10 years. During the school year Compline is sung on 2nd & 4th Sundays at 8:00pm, in a contemplative atmosphere of quiet devotion. The Schola, led by John Whitt, sings a varied repertoire of a capella music from chant to 20th century. You are warmly invited to explore this beautiful service as part of your own spiritual practice, and we hope that it may draw in people from the community  - indeed, it is a unique offering in the city of Atlanta.

EastWest Organists

Brad Hughley joined the roster of a newly formed cooperative of organ recitalists in August 2006. Called EastWest Organists, the group features nine young artists who are emerging as concert organists in addition to careers as choir directors, church organists, and music professors. Each of the organists forming the cooperative is a graduate of either the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY) or Westminster Choir College (Princeton, NJ), two of the most prominent schools in the country for organ studies. Hence, the name "EastWest" was formed. For more information, visit http://www.eastwestorganists.com/

St. Bartholomew’s Choirs take on the West Coast in 2009!
In 1997 the music department undertook a trip to Washington, DC to sing at the National

Cathedral. Over ten years later we’re mustering the courage to cook up another, much larger and longer trip. We’re partnering with the Cathedral Choir of St. Philip to undertake a concert and service tour of San Francisco, Seattle, and Victoria in June 2009 for 10 days. Our music department is a strong part of the identity of St. Bartholomew’s, and we want to share that beyond the boundaries of metro Atlanta. The tour planning committee supported the idea of a U.S. tour; the current economy situation doesn’t make a trip abroad (to the UK, for example) viable, and why not explore some of the gorgeous landmarks of our own country? Highlights include singing at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco and St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle, and listening to Compline at St. Mark’s under the leadership of renowned conductor Peter Hallock. We need support from the parish to go on this trip – several activities are planned to raise awareness and raise funds for the trip.
