Choirs  Current Choir Calendar - 2008-2009
2008 - 2009 List of Music East Coast Tour Announced

The Canterbury Choir
Wednesday evenings, 7:30 - 9:30 pm
This group of adults sings a wide repertoire and participates, on average, at two Sunday morning services each month. It frequently offers a Solemn Evensong service on major holy days. Membership into the Canterbury Choir is contingent upon a thorough audition, satisfying a high standard of sight reading skill as well as a good sense of pitch. This choir released their first CD in June, 2005.

The Parish Choir
Thursday evenings, 7:30 - 9:00 pm
Our other adult choir of men & women, the Parish Choir sings less frequently than the Canterbury Choir. Its membership consists of singers with various degrees of experience, with no audition required. This choir typically schedules approximately half as many commitments as the Canterbury Choir.

Treble Choir - for children 3rd grade and older
Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Members of this choir will learn and live the liturgy and music of the Episcopal Church. Its music cultivates a solid theology, and regular participation in rehearsals incorporates a sense of teamwork and camaraderie. Based on the Royal School of Church Music scheme used in churches internationally, the Sts. Nicolas & Cecilia Choir rewards individual achievement based on the commitment level of each chorister. The 3 stages (indicated by light blue ribbon, dark blue ribbon, and red ribbon) carefully intertwine skills and knowledge of musical training, group activity, and Christian education. The choir will share more than just rehearsal time with each other - fun events will balance out the year, such as a pool party, day trips, and parties. Children may join at any time, and no prior training or experience is required. This choir sings for approximately one Sunday service per month. A reasonably high level of commitment is required.

St. Bartholomew's Schola
Second & Fourth Sundays
St. Bartholomew's ScholaThe Schola is a small ensemble of 10 members who sing the office of Compline twice monthly (second and fourth Sundays at 8:00 pm, September - May). The repertoire is completely a capella. The choir is auditioned.
This choir is directed by John Whitt. An organ recital precedes Compline on Four Sundays throughout the year. Click here to see the Organ Recital Series.

Top Ten Excuses for not singing in a St. Bartholomew’s Choir…

10) I'm not good enough. 9) I don't have the time. 8) The music's too hard. 7) The commitment is too much. 6) I don't know anyone in the choir. 5) There aren't any bathrooms near the rehearsal room. 4) Been there, done that. 3) I do other things for the church. 2) I can't fit in in my schedule after school, soccer, homework, fencing lessons, orchestra, and private dancing lessons. 1) There aren't any choir vestments that fit me.

The number one reason to JOIN a choir:

God calls us to use our talents, not to hide them under a bushel. Choirs in liturgy have historic importance - in Medieval times choirs were among the only members of society who could read, along with ordained clergy. Throughout the ages choirs have retained significance as custodians of liturgy, not just singers who offer an anthem or two every week. Each person in the choir brings particular strengths, musically AND spiritually, to the whole group. Don't leave it to the folks who have been serving faithfully for decades to keep on leading the music - make a difference and join the choir. Each of our choirs needs new singers to join the ranks this fall - we have opportunities for auditioned and unauditioned singers, depending upon your abilities. If you have been told you have a lovely voice and should join the choir, but haven't done it, we know who you are!

Top Ten Reasons for Singing in a St. Bartholomew's Choir…

10) We get to sit in the cushy chairs. 9) Best view in the church. 8) No choir sings every Sunday - try finding that arrangement at any other church in town! 7) You only have to worry about clothes from the shins down. 6) Easter party! 5) Other parties! 4) Community like none other. 3) Best acoustics in Atlanta or anywhere for singing. 2) Music and words you rehearse sticks with you for life. 1) What we sing with our lips may be shown forth in our lives.

St. Bartholomew’s Choirs take on the East Coast in 2009!
In June 2009 our adult choirs will travel to New York City for services and concerts in some of the nation's most revered spaces of worship. We plan to sing the principal Sunday service at St. Thomas Fifth Avenue (www.stthomaschurch.org) , home to one of the country's finest choir of men and boys. Later we will sing Evensong at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (www.stjohndivine.org), the largest Cathedral in the Anglican Communion. The choirs will perform a concert as well, in a space to be determined. This is an exciting step in the music department's history - the last tour the choirs made was in 1997 to the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. Watch for details as we approach the tour dates.
